Kenyon-Wanamingo Welcomes New Superintendent

Of life's many unexplainable concepts, time seems to be the one that gives us the most trouble. Without a second glance back at their past three months, society stows away its summer sandals and prepares for all things fall. Autumn colors, inviting flavors, and cooler weather are all welcome aspects of the new season, but the transition also brings the unavoidable presence of the school year. Regardless of whether you're a struggling student or parent eager to see your kid succeed, the importance of academics in our society is hard to debate. Patrick Heiderscheit understands this principle more than most, having positively impacted students through various administrative roles over the years. With the turn of this school year came his most notable opportunity yet: to lead the Kenyon-Wanamingo Public School District as its new superintendent.

Patrick Heiderscheit: "I chose education as a career because I thoroughly enjoyed my school experience and fully understand the importance of education in society. My positions in the PK-12 system have changed over the years, but my purpose remains the same: to contribute in positively impacting students each day."

Fulfilling this mission statement would not have been possible without his start as a student in New Albin, Iowa. Surrounded by the support of his large family, Pat was born in 1966 and learned the value of education through his time at Kee High School. After graduating, he and his wife attended Iowa State University, the post-secondary institution that strengthened his love for learning. Outside of work, Pat boasts all the characteristics of a simple, family-oriented life: pickleball, walking his dogs, and binge-watching TV shows with his wife. Their thirty-six years of marriage have resulted in two children now living in the southern suburbs of the Twin Cities. Although two grandchildren are already a source of significant joy, the couple is anxious for their daughter and her husband to add to the count.

Despite his former work being based exclusively in Iowa, transitioning into the Kenyon-Wanamingo district has been far from unfamiliar. With so many similarities between his home district and K-W, he took the chance to become superintendent without hesitation. Having worked in the Allamakee, Eastern Allamakee, Ames, & Keystone AEA districts, Pat's ample experience is sure to strengthen the district's financial health. As superintendent, his responsibility lies in managing students' contemporary learning opportunities amidst the district's financial resources. Striking a balance between finance and opportunity will prove difficult, but walking the tightrope will allow him to achieve his long-term goal of guiding the district out of statutory operating debt. Despite this "black cloud" of Kenyon-Wanamingo's financial position, he remains firm in carving a successful path forward.

"My promise to the K-W community is simple: I will do my best to serve our school. If at any time I feel I've become ineffective, I will step aside. I am confident, though, in my ability to lead the district to a position of both financial and academic strength."

This very assurance has guided Patrick Heiderscheit's efforts for many years across several school districts. After recognizing this vision for financial and academic success, Kenyon-Wanamingo had no difficulty labeling him the ideal choice for superintendent. The district has not been the only one benefiting from the change in management, however. At the heart of Pat's purpose for a career in education are the incredible people, whom he describes as the most enjoyable part of his work. Since the very first day of the school year, students and citizens alike have welcomed Pat into their school halls and greater community. With each new turn of the calendar, our obligation is to follow in the footsteps of people like Patrick Heiderscheit in remembering our primary motivations. A path forward may be challenging, but it is mandatory.
