Well, it is fall, and time again for the tradition of Homecoming in Keyon/Wanamingo schools. There are a lot of activities to let you know about, and it looks like some fun is about to happen! But first, your history lesson.
Homecoming originated in 1910 when 2 University of Illinois students came up with the idea to urge the University's Council of Administration to sanction an annual "homecoming". This holiday would afford the alumni and students the opportunity to come into closer touch with each other. Current students and faculty would mingle with those who had come before them, creating camaraderie, and bond that could continue every year. School pride was enhanced with a football game, and a dance to follow. It is basically a time to reminisce about their time at their school, and celebrate a sense of community and school spirit. There was a vote as to who the Master of Ceremonies would be, and who would have the honor of being named King and Queen. This tradition carries on today, and I would think most of the schools in our country still carry on this celebration.
This year's Homecoming Dance for 9-12 will be Saturday, September 28th from 7 to 11 pm in the High School gym. On Monday, September 30th , the Coronation will take place at 7:00 pm, also in the gym, and there will be no fee to get in to the Coronation. Homecoming buttons will be for sale for $3.00 at the coronation for the rest of the activities. There will be several events going on to celebrate Homecoming Week.. Beefcake Volleyball game will be played on Thursday morning Oct. 3 from 8:30 to 10:30 in the gym, and the Powderpuff Football game on Friday afternoon Oct. 4th at 1:45 pm on the football field. The Homecoming game will be played at 7:00 pm on Oct. 4th against Bethlehem Academy.
