Council Approves 6.8% Levy Increase for 2023

During the December meeting the Kenyon city council approved a 6.8% levy increase which had been expected since the preliminary budget completed last September. This increase of $75,000 will fund a 3% cost of living increase for full time city employees as well as a 5% health insurance cost increase.

This levy increase will raise property taxes by about $180 for a home in the city appraised at a quarter of a million dollars. The reason for the need in extra revenue from the levy is blamed on inflation.

The city also is anticipating a number of street projects to begin this spring which includes mill and overlay on Sevenths Street, Eighth Street, Bullis Street and Washington Street. It is possible parts of State Street and Washington Street may be added as well. The total bids on the street project are expected to be between $500,000 and $600,000.

Wastewater sewer line issues between Second Street and State Highway 60 have been a problem and will need to be addressed in the coming year. The removal and replacement of these sewer lines are expected to cost at least one and a quarter million dollars to complete.
